Masquerade

Masquerade

One of my favorite days of the year is Halloween. I love seeing the excited expressions of children wearing costumes and masks of characters they imagine themselves being.

I especially love the delighted giggles when they think that an adult truly believes they are the character they are dressed up to be or when an adult pretends that they don’t know who is behind the mask. As kids, it can be fun to hide behind a mask.

As adults, many of us wear masks as a way of adapting to roles in which we do not feel we can be authentic. Adult masks are generally not about the costume we wear but rather words we speak, actions we take, or the actual roles we play that do not allow us to be authentic.

We may feel we need to impress or show up a certain way to be accepted. We may feel a lack of confidence in who we are thus uncomfortable or afraid to reveal our true selves.

Like kids, we may be delighted or even relieved that we have ‘fooled’ those around us. Yet for adults it is about the safely that the disguise provides.Playing a role, which requires disguising your authenticity will not provide happiness in the long run. It is exhausting to act like someone you are not and possibly more importantly suffocating to suppress the true you.

We all have multiple roles in life. People who experience the greatest amount of sustained success and happiness show up authentically in every role in their life. They have oneness with the way they think, what they speak, how they feel and what they do.

We all have multiple roles in life. People who experience the greatest amount of sustained success and happiness show up authentically in every role in their life. They have oneness with the way they think, what they speak, how they feel and what they do. They have boundaries that are in alignment with their values. They express their uniqueness to the world. When we are authentic we do our best. People gravitate toward authenticity. Authenticity attracts to you more of what you desireAuthenticity is charismatic.

In this week of masquerade, think about the various roles you play in your life and where you might be wearing a mask.   Use your child-like imagination to picture what it would feel like to be totally authentic in that role.

Choose one way you can show-up authentically and experiment with it.Notice how people love the real you!
