|My father was a smart man yet I recall one particular idea that he had that truly did not serve him well. That idea was that there was no room for failure. The reason I say it did not serve him well is that when he had what he felt was a failure he took it really hard. He was critical of himself, judged himself and measured himself against others whom he felt were more successful.
How do you feel when you experience failure? Would you love to have a formula for success? I think we all would!
I am sure you would agree that Tom Watson, the founder of IBM knew theFormula for Success. He asked “Would you like me to give you the formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double you rate of failure.”
YIKES! If you are like my Dad that might be some pretty difficult advice to take.
Watson goes on to say, “You’re thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all…you can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it. Make all [the mistakes] you can. Because remember, that’s where you’ll find success…on the far side [of failure]”.
We all have successes and failures on the journey through life, there is no way around that. We have a choice however, we can let failures stop us in our tracks or we can learn from them and use that new knowledge to move us closer to our next success!
The next time you have what, at first, feels like a failure, notice how you feel. If you feel discouraged, cancel that thought, find the learning and celebrate your new knowledge. Then get moving putting it to work! Use it as a stepping stone!
To a shift in perspective!
